Men’s summer style essentials

Life in the capital means taking a layered approach to warm-weather style as any outfit must be able to withstand the demands of a stuffy commute on the tube, cocktails on a sunny terrace with friends and, of course, the odd summer shower.

Putting together a summer wardrobe that combines style and practicality can seem like an impossible task, but luckily we’re here to help you maximise the time spent soaking up those elusive rays with our edit of summer style essentials for men.

The shoes

These should be lightweight and versatile. Turn to the fashion pack’s current favourite, the all-white sneaker, to give an otherwise autumnal outfit a crisp finish. Be warned though, if you’re going to try this particular trend, don’t forget your shades - a boxfresh pair can be blindingly white in the sun.

Adidas’ Stan Smiths are the go-to, but if you’re looking for something a little less ubiquitous, the brand’s sleeker Gazelle style is a safe bet. Sandals are ideal for days when the weather is reliably fine, a smart pair in soft leather or suede shouldn’t be too controversial – just leave the socks at home and make sure your toenails are tidy.

For those reluctant to forgo their trusty winter footwear, Albam’s suede Chukka boot/deck shoe hybrid is a compromise even the most dedicated desert boot fan can make.

The jacket

London’s changeable weather can feel unmanageable, so short of carrying a pac-a-mac on your person at all times, what’s the solution? A sleek and lightly weatherproof top layer.

Universal Works has the combination down to a fine art and its Labour jacket takes the hard work out of summer dressing and comes in several wearable shades including navy and camel.

The layers

A shirt over T-shirt is a failsafe way of layering and an easy way to introduce – or tone down – pattern depending on your predilection for print. Stripes are a classic and add a touch of summer jauntiness to your look.

The shorts

We like short shorts. Well not quite, but in menswear hemlines are definitely on the rise this season.

Swimwear specialists Orlebar Brown has parlayed the tailored fit of its swimming trunks into shorts in similar styles. The Norwich fit in navy should prove a summer stalwart and, sitting just above the knee, not overly brief.

The sunglasses

The classic aviator is enjoying something of a renaissance this summer, with the sleek metal frames of this stylish celebrity favourite vying for attention with chunkier styles.
