The sun is out. Summer vibes are going on in full swing. Snow cones, tanning, beach days, and a newfound sense of freedom hang in the humid air. However, of the anticipated summer moments, the new fashion trends that our favorite celebrities don is the most exciting. 2016 is no exception!
1. Printed Shorts
This summer is all about prints. From cheetah printed jumpsuits to avocado printed socks, the season is all about fun and crazy prints. What better way to channel this than a cute pair of printed shorts to conquer the heat in style? Grab a pair from your local thrift shop or brands such as Zara and Banana Republic for a look that’ll keep you cool, figuratively and literally. If you’re not into the shorts, worry not: printed pants, capris, and tights can also be the way to go.
2. Leather Dresses
Before you refer me to a psychiatrist, listen to what I have to say. It’s true that leather dresses are back even in this season, but make sure you’re thinking of the right kind. I’m talking loose leather in colors such white, tan, gray, red, and black (obviously) with the perfect cuts and folds.
3. Crop Tops
Crop tops have been a staple summer trend for a while and this year, too, they’re here to stay. Search for crop tops in both long and short sleeves in a variety of playful prints or cool neutrals to pair with flowery skirts, high rise jeans, or whatever your heart desires for a look that’s sure to make for some artsy Instagram photos, which, let’s be real, is the only thing that matters.
4. Backless Dresses
Girl, you’ve been working on your back muscles all day and night by lying on your back and scrolling through Pinterest; it’s safe to say it’s time for a little showing off. Muffin top, rolls, and chubbiness exist. Don’t let that bother you. Pick a backless dress off the rack to embody the saying “business in the front, a party in the back!” (Don’t hate me).
5. Boudoir-Inspired, Ready-to-Wear Silk
Yes, silk has a lot of glamor attached to it, but what makes silk so special in my book is how comfortable it is! This summer, take the nightgown to the runway and steal some hearts (or the office cafeteria to eat some Chobani in the corner, whatever works).
6. White Suits
Sure, black business suits are industrial and classy, but white suits are so much more subtle, clean, and refined. Plus, they can be paired so many different ways and be taken in so many different directions. Go minimal with black peep-toes or pair the suit with purple platforms and a printed top for a night on the town. Customizable and cute? Count me in!
7. Closed-Toe Shoes
Surely this is another one of those times where you question my credibility as an author, but it’s true: ditch the Havaianas flip flops and Birkenstocks for some ballet flats or pumps. Closed toe shoes are making a comeback this summer, so stay or leave. The ultimate fashion fate is up to you.
8. Denim Mini Skirts
What’s this you hear?! Denim minis are back?! Blessed to be the messenger, ladies. You can uncover that mountain of denim minis from the early 2000s because it is, once again, their time to shine. Pair these cute minis with a floral button-up or a plain white tee for a day downtown in style.
9. Round, Mirrored Sunglasses
Big or small, gold or silver accents, rounded mirrored sunglasses are here for all your music festival needs, Instagram flat lays (yes, I know about those!), or chill rides home. Pick a pair up from ASOS, Aldo, or the random sunglasses mall cart your ex-boyfriend or third cousin works at for all your retro-inspired needs.
10. Return of the Tie Dye
Who says all fashion trends have to be store bought?! For a fashion trend that you can curate in your garage, tie dye is pretty trendy. Colorful rainbow splatter on white and a trend that makes my pizza sauce stain look like an intended decoration? Perfection.
11. Pom Poms
Currently spotted on shorts hems, keychains, sandals, hats, and handbags, these little rainbow fuzzies are sure to add some color to your life. And, if you’re feeling creative, there are plenty of ways to DIY these at home to renew your old accessories.
12. Sport Logos
This is the one trend I’m sure 99 percent of people have called. Brands such as Nike, Reebok, Adidas are becoming part of a must-have ensemble. Models and actresses alike have these prominent logos etched across windbreakers, snapbacks, shoes, t-shirts and more.
